NON COMPOS MENTIS

They beat violently against the membrane walls,
to escape the cell to which they have been banished.
I crouch holding myself in the black corner,
waiting as weeks turn into days, and hours to minutes.

Her sultry lips beckon to me,
so I may caress them with my fiery touch.
I see her image wandering lost inside my head,
and bash my head against the bars so as to let her out.

My vacuous stare betrays my plight;
for I have since become a companion of the goddess Lyssa.
The curls of my hair are braided with dust, majestically adorned with the crown of delirium,
and my eyes have been struck by the rod of Moses.

Set me free from thy dreadful snare,
oh madness which hath consumed me.

MORTAL MALADY

For he who is not sick today;
shall be sick tomorrow,
So that he may never be sick again.

IMPOTENT

I cannot change my past,
nor create my future.
I merely live what is to be.

REFT SOUL by Adesina Aanuoluwapo John

   I once had been served the wine of love; dutifully pressed from the grapes of cupid's vineyard. It was ever so sweet; intoxicating mind, body and soul. But this spirituous drink leaveth a bitter aftertaste.
   Her evil face clouds my mind like the ashes of the burning souls of hell. I remember the tone of her skin; viciously pale and whiter than the lies she told. She purchased my love with the crookedness of her heart, and my affection with the veil of deception.
    I fear to love another as I did her; for I fear I might rape her of her faith. My heart is now caked like the mud of the earth; eternally hardened, never to beat again.

O SWEET MAYA

Woman of grace, ever so wise;
selfless and bold, queen of my heart.
O sweet Maya won't you now rise?
And grace our sights with your black art.

You need not ask your count of worth,
thy wondrous deeds speak well of this.
My sweet journey to my rebirth,
I credit you with for I boast bliss.

I fear no more for my sick land,
for you have said she shall arise.
When worry ploughs, I bravely stand;
for I have help beyond the skies.

Your words have helped fill me with love,
I pray thee soar O gorgeous dove.

INSANITY FEARS NOT

He trod over miles of scorching earth,
and his back receives the lashes of the vexed rains.
He dances to a melodious silence in pitiful mirth,
for his heart knows not the world's anguish and pains.

He grazes on the fields of weeds and moss,
and preys on an absent enemy like a wolf does.
His eyes accommodate no tears, for they know no loss,
and on the bark of the Simarouba, he gleefully gnaws.

He journeys under the unsmiling silhouette of night,
for his poor mind is oblivious to caution.
Unlike his brothers, he has no ambition in his sight,
for he is satisfied with his meager portion.

He stands tall on the mountain and leaps, soaring into the air,
falling ever so graciously, for his mind is no place for fear.

ARTIST’S IMPRESSION (PROSE POEM)

The best moments of my life have been captured by the lens of my eyes, and stored in the memory of my heart.
